The 50 Yard Line - Week 5

The big disadvantage to being a Central League powerhouse is that everyone is always gunning for you. Garnet Valley has had the Panther "number" since they entered the Central League four years ago. Haven has only managed to beat them once in those four years (we also lost to them once in a playoff game) and that was last year in a come-from-behind thriller. This year the Panthers took advantage of what, should have been, two fatal errors by the Jaguars. After leading 14-0 in the first quarter the Jags came back with an answer of 21 points in the second quarter. Both teams were kept in check for the entire second half, although both teams did threaten.

This week the Panthers return home to face the 1-3 Upper Darby Royals. They've lost to Harriton and Garnet Valley while beating Lower Merion in their league opener. The Royals are led by junior #11 quarterback Nii Kotei Nikoi. Their favorite running backs are #21 Soncarly Winpea and #8 Devan Owens. They do like to pass the ball and look for Nikoi's favorite targets in #18 Dayo Kuteyi and #2 Mike Pastella. Upper Darby is one of the rare high school teams that would prefer to throw the ball than run it.

Strath Haven must get back on track. While their game against Marple Newtown was simply a bad game their Garnet Valley defeat was played well. They were outmatched in the second quarter and GV played some great defense in the second half. A little more passing for the Panthers would help to establish a rhythm (we're partial to short timing passes either outside or quick cross patterns) which not only become solid yard gainers but also keep the defense from cheating in tight into the box and forcing six or seven of our blockers to take on 10 of their defenders. We have the advantage of a young (sophomore) quarterback who has talent. It would be a great idea to develop him into a balanced quarterback over the next three years.
